will never forget Donald Zinkoff. He’s the kid who wears a giraffe
hat to the first day of school, waves his hand madly in the air to
tell the teacher when he has misbehaved, laughs uproariously over
almost anything and generally is the sloppy klutz. Though his classmates
in the early grades think he’s just amusingly different, as
he progresses through school Zinkoff becomes known to everyone as
a real “loser” and the butt of many cruel acts. What makes
Zinkoff so memorable is his utter failure to see himself as a loser.
He is so enthusiastic about life and seeing the goodness in everything,
that he doesn’t have time to dwell on what the other kids are
saying. Zinkoff is irrepressible – Zinkoff is a hero. |

Morpurgo is the Children’s Laureate writer of England and his
huge talent is very evident in this piece of writing about World War
I. Thomas Peaceful, the central character, enlists for the war with
his brother Charlie even though he is under age. The story is told

of the battlefield. The reader can hear the squelch of the mud in
the trenches and see the swirls of mustard gas descend into them.
Bullets, blood, disease, rats, wounded men crying, listless men with
vacant eyes – all are a part of Tommy’s experience at
the front in France. The conclusion is disturbing as the reader discovers
what has become of Tommy and Charlie. A difficult but powerful story
